How do I select a Kennel Free environment for my dog?
Currently, there is no specific licensing or accreditation for dog daycare businesses. You should visit the Daleycare facility, you will see an attentive staff that monitors dogs at all times while they are at play, a staff to dog ratio of 1:10 or better, clean conditions (spotless may be unattainable since dogs shed and don't put their toys away, but you will see that accidents are taken care of immediately). Dogs at Daleycare are not over crowded and there is ample space for dogs to rest in one area and play in another. Lastly notice that the Daleycare facility is "dog proofed" and dogs are safe where they play.
How can I be sure my dog is being treated well ?
After visiting the Daleycare facility, please stop in often and at different time to observe how my staff handles different situations like toy disputes, mounting behavior, irritability, picking fights, accidents, and other problems. In handling dogs, there are many different methods and much depends on the experience and training of those that manage the dogs. Here at Daleycare we have methods spelled out in our training manual for our employees so there is a uniformity of methods and philosophy. If your dog seems unhappy about going to a daycare, you should try Daleycare out for a week or two and I promise that you will see a different dog, a dog that is socialized, happy, and most days after a hike through many of our State Parks a tired dog. At Daleycare we believe that the key to a well behaved dog is that the dog gets the exercise it needs. If your looking for your dog to be kept in a kennel and walked around a small fenced in yard for few minutes, three times a day then Daleycare is not for you, if your looking for your dog to be running through parks, taking a dip in a pond or two (weather permitting of course) and healthily playing and interacting with others of its own kind please call me for an interview
What about my dog getting sick from another dog?
Most diseases your dog could contract in a dog daycare setting are prevented by keeping your dog up-to-date with their vaccinations, worming and flea/tick prevention. However, some diseases like Bordatella, commonly known as "canine cough " have many different strains. The vaccination your vet provided only covers one or two strains seen commonly in your area. It is always possible your dog could contract "Canine Cough" when one dog in the daycare has been exposed to it and begins to show the symptoms. Usually, Once the staff hears a dog coughing -- they know to quarantine the affected dog and send him home. Daleycare will let you know if an outbreak has occurred, clean the daycare thoroughly, and observe if the other dogs begin to show symptoms. There are also some other less common ailments your dog could contract, like Viral Pappiloma or Leptosporosis. Vaccination is available for areas these are commonly seen.
